How to write an informal letter
We are social beings and we need to communicate among ourselves, we can do it in many different ways but since the beginning of civilizations people have written to their friends or family members in letters. Then in the nineteenth century after the invention of telegraph and telephone people could communicate quickly and also converse orally but in the twentieth century and onwards we also share our personal experiences, opinions, information not only using the written words in letters or postcards but also by e-mails that are sent to our relatives or friends.
These informal letters can be quite short or long and they can be creative, sensitive or emotional which depends on the purpose of it and the person addressed. The language can be colloquial and contain contractions, neologisms, etc. and though they can be quite open and imaginative, there is an essential pattern to comply for informal letters:
Place and Date
Dear …. ,
-Greeting and introduction: how are you? And writing the reason
why you write, express interest in the person addressed, etc.
-Body: express events, feelings, situations, information, etc.
-Closing: conclude your letter and greet in an informal farewell or good-bye.
The usual informal signing off of a farewell to a relative,
sweetheart or friend can be like these:
I hope to hear from you soon. I can´t wait to see you again…
Saying goodbye and final signature: it can be quite creative because you are writing to
people who are your relatives or friends and you know each other well. Thus,
you can even finish with a funny remark or your mutual nickname to your sweetheart,
etc. there are some common examples are:
Goodbye / Bye, Bye for now, ya…
Warm/ Best/ Kind regards
/ Kindly / Regards/ Best wishes
Take care (cuídate)/ All my love / Lots of love / Love / Kisses
/ Lots of hugs / Hugs / Sweet kisses / Yours…
See you soon,next, then, at…So long / Cheers / Cheerio / Tara /
Ta-ta (for now)
Remember that the informal letter or e-mail can use simple,
casual language, it has an emotional and subjective tone and they are written
for personal reasons and belong to everyone´s private life.
