Prepositions of place
Prepositions are frequently used; they indicate direction, position, place, etc and used to go after the main verb. The most common are these:
-on(the Spanish translation is en, sobre). He was lying on the carpet.
-to (a, hacia): it indicates direction towards. She went to the balcony.
-at (a, en): position, place. They were waiting at bus stop.
-in (en, dentro): location, inside something. The doll was hidden in the case.
-into (a, a dentro de): direction. This goes into this file.
-under (bajo): position or location. The thief was hidden under the bed.
-over (sobre) position. The plane has flown over the city.
-beside (al lado de): position, place. They were beside the policemen.
-between (entre dos): position. He was between the Parliament and the Opera House.
-from (de, desde): direction of origin. She came from Germany.
-with (con): position. She was walking with her mother.
-across(a través de): indicates direction. The rabbit ran across the field.
Prepositions are very useful giving directions like in such example:
-Excuse me, how can I get to the post office?
-It is in Brook Road, next to a school. It is between the mall and the shopping centre. From this road you go straight into a roundabout, once you arrive you turn left, then you walk into Dale avenue and beside a pub there is a narrow street, you go ahead into it and pass under an arcade, you walk across it, you arrive at a park, turn right and you find it.
Now imagine you are in Piccadilly Circus in London, ask a bobby how you can get to these places:
-Houses of Parliament and the Big Ben.
-10 Downing Street
-Kensington Gardens
-Trafalgar Square.
-National Gallery
-Madame Tussaud´s Wax Museum.
For example:
Tourist: How can I get to Westminster Abbey?
Bobby: Go along King´s Road and turn right, then you will find it beside a Green Park. Go straight ahead, go on across the park and you will find it behind College Garden.
